JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team lost 2-1 in double overtime to the University of Alabama in Huntsville Monday at Smith Soccer Complex. Union dropped to 0-4 on the season and 0-4 in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series. Alabama Huntsville improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in the GSC SCS.
Union and Alabama Huntsville played scoreless soccer for 43 minutes in the first half. However, the action picked up in the final two minutes. Union's
Claire Maxon, a freshman from Henderson, Tenn., scored first with a goal at the 43:02 mark. She took a loose ball and drilled the lower center of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Union.
The lead for Union was short-lived as Alabama Huntsville took advantage of a corner kick opportunity with eight seconds left. Carline Buchanan scored on a pass from Laura Hasani. The match was tied 1-1 at the break. UAH outshot Union 8-7 but Union led 6-3 in shots on goal.
Neither team scored in the second half. UAH controlled the ball most of the half, outshooting Union 11-2 overall and 3-1 on goal. Nine of Alabama Huntsville's 13 corner kicks in regulation occurred in the second half.
After a scoreless first overtime period, UAH took advantage of a Union foul, earning a free kick along the right side of the goal, about 25 yards out. Buchanan placed a ball in the box and Taylor Wilson re-directed the ball into the lower right corner of the goal for the win.
UAH outshot Union 23-9 in the game, including 8-7 in shots on goal. Mason led Union with five shots and
Hannah Patterson added three shots.
Anna Venckus had six saves in her 102 minutes of work.
