Bulldogs close out series with win against AUM

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team won the series finale Sunday, March 7, against Auburn University in Montgomery by a score of 12-8, after dropping the first two games 4-3, and 10-7 on Saturday. Union moved to 7-6 overall and 6-6 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM moved to 9-7 on the season and 8-7 in league play.

In the series finale, the Bulldogs struck first, and struck big, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an Austin Zeitler two RBI double to right field, and a Patrick Music two RBI double to right field. However, the Warhawks of AUM weren't defeated yet, scoring the next 4 runs to tie the game at 4-4. AUM scored one in the top of the second inning with an RBI single, and three in the top of the fourth inning with an RBI single to left, and a two RBI triple to right field. Just like the Warhawks in the second inning, the Bulldogs scored the next four runs in the fifth inning after a walk scored one, and an error in the field scored another for the Bulldogs, then Trey Frierson came up huge with a two RBI single to right field. The Bulldogs tacked on one more in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly from Jake Baker. The next three runs were in the Warhawks favor, scoring all three in the eighth inning making the score 9-7 going into the bottom of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth inning when the Bulldogs needed most, Patrick Music stepped up to the plate and hit an opposite field, three run home run over the right field wall to give the Bulldogs all the insurance they needed to close this one out. With the score now at 12-7, AUM gave one last push scoring one run in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs closed the series with a 12-8 win.

Union was led by Patrick Music who knocked in six RBI's and went 3-4 at the plate, scoring 2 runs of his own and walking once. Trey Frierson, Austin Zietler, and Josh Bozoian all added two hits apiece to the total, Frierson and Zeitler also brought in two RBI's a piece. Rounding out the hits in today's game was Britt Netterville and A'Darius Pugh with one a piece. On the bump for Union, Brandon Maxwell started, pitching four complete innings, giving up four earned runs with one strikeout. In relief and earning the win was Cooper Bullough, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up zero earned runs with two strikeouts. Logan Portis pitched one inning giving up three earned runs, and one strikeout. Finally, Parker Shreve came in to close it out, earning his second save of the year, pitching 1.1 innings giving up one earned run.

Up next for Union will be a road GSC series against the Blazers of Valdosta State. That series will begin with a doubleheader on March 13, starting at 12 p.m. local time, and will finish with one game on Sunday, March 14, starting at noon local time.
