Before Union
Portis transferred to Union from Labette Community College where he played two years of baseball. He was named honorable mentioned all-conference twice, while also playing in the KJCCC Sophomore Showcase All-Star Game. Portis set a school record with 17 strikeouts in a game, and finished the season tied for 24th in the nation with 88 strikeouts. Portis prepped at Pasadena Memorial High School where he played four years of baseball and one season of bowling. He advanced to the state tournament in bowling. In baseball, Portis was twice named all-district, twice named All-Houston 6A pitcher, twice named his team's pitcher of the year, and was named team MVP as a senior. Portis posted an ERA of 0.97 as a junior and 0.88 as a senior.
