Union men's soccer wins 1-0 over CBU on senior day

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over Christian Brothers University Saturday afternoon at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union improved to 2-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series. Christian Brothers dropped to 1-2 overall and in GSC SCS play.

The win for Union over CBU was the first since 2012, snapping an 0-9-1 winless stretch.

Union head coach Steven Cox said, "It was a great team performance in all phases of the game. Our guys defended very well and scored a great goal. I am proud that we could send the seniors off with a win on senior night."

The game was scoreless for over 82 minutes. Union's Stan De Vries broke through with a goal, assisted by Gavin Scott. Scott sent a perfect cross into the box just over the reach of the goalie and De Vries was there for the tap in.

Union outshot CBU 14-7 in the game and 9-2 in shots on goal. Union was also better in corner kicks, 6-1.

Botond Nemeth recorded two saves in his 90 minutes in goal. Wayne Davis of CBU had seven saves in 90 minutes of work.

William Valencia and Scott Gavin led with five shots each.

Four seniors, Jacob Greene, Parker Miller, AJ Morgado, and Hunter Walker, were each honored prior to the match.

Up next for Union will be the final regular season game of the year, a road match at West Alabama March 13 at 3 p.m.
