Union men's soccer earns 3-2 win at UWA, clinches home game to open GSC Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 3-2 win over the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 3-1 overall and in the GSC Spring Championship Series while West Alabama dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

With the win, Union earned the No. 2 seed in Group A of the GSC Spring Championship Series and will host Lee University (Group B, No. 3 seed) in the tournament quarterfinals on Saturday, March 20. The game will mark Union's first time hosting a GSC postseason game since joining the league in 2012. Game time is to be announced. 

The win also marked Union's first victory over West Alabama in program history. 

Union's William Valencia scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 28th minute of the match. Gavin Scott then scored his second goal of the season in the 39th minute of play, assisted by Billy Grogan. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime. West Alabama outshot Union 7-5 in the first half but was unable to get on the board.  

West Alabama scored in the 58th minute with a goal from Jared Walker. Mats Fredriksen then scored his second goal of the season for the Bulldogs in 61st minute, which would turn out to be the game-winner. 

West Alabama scored again just 36 seconds after Fredriksen's goal, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for the win.  

West Alabama outshot Union 14-12 throughout the game, including 8-6 in shots on goal. Union's goalkeeper Botond Nemeth recorded six saves in the game, playing all 90 minutes.
