Dahlonega, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball team fell to the University of North Georgia 66-58 in the South Region semifinals. Union finished their season 19-6. North Georgia improved to 18-1.
Union scored the first six points with a layup along with an and-one from Jaelencia Williams, followed by a three pointer by Emily Beard. With a layup from Williams, Union took a 10-7 lead halfway through the first quarter. However, the Nighthawks took a 10-9 lead shortly after and held that lead until shortly after halftime. The halftime score was 32-30 in the Nighthawks favor.
The Lady Bulldogs opened up the second half with a layup by Jaelencia Williams and that tied the game at 32-32. After the Nighthawks took the lead by as many as nine points at the beginning of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs worked extremely hard to tie the game again halfway through the fourth quarter at 54-54. After a few missed shots by Union and a few made baskets by North Georgia, the Nighthawks extended their lead to eight points with only 12 seconds left, which would end up being the dagger for the Lady Bulldogs, as they fell in this game 66-58, and the host North Georgia Nighthawks head to the South Regional Championship.
Union was led Jaelencia Williams scoring 25 points with 10 rebounds, adding yet another double-double to her career, as well as Shanique Lucas with 22 points and five assists; those two made up 47 of the teams 58 points. Selale Kepenc led the team in rebounds with 11.
The Bulldogs were 21-49 shooting 42% from the field, 5-27 shooting 18% from three point range, and 11-14 shooting 78% from the free throw line.
North Georgia was led by Julianne Sutton who had 30 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. They were 24-62 shooting 38% from the field, 7-27 shooting 25% from the three point line, and 11-13 shooting 84% from the free throw line.
