Union baseball drops double-header, game two in extra innings walk-off fashion

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team dropped the season opening doubleheader at Lee University in Cleveland, Saturday. Union lost the first game 8-0, then lost the second game 3-2 in nine innings. Union moved to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee moved to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in league play.  

In game one, Union found a chance early when Britt Netterville and Josh Bozoian both walked to reach base. They were left stranded to close out the top of the first. In the top of the second Noah Dominguez reached base on an error, and Cooper Bullough reached on a walk, however like the first, those runners were stranded. In the bottom of the third Lee scored five runs on three hits and one error in the field. In the bottom of the fifth the Flames extended their lead to eight runs, where it remained. Walker Adkisson took the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching four innings, giving up only three earned runs, and seven total runs. Adkisson had two strikeouts. On the offensive side Ryan Lee, Austin Zeitler, and Noah Dominguez had the Bulldogs only three hits.  

In game two, the first four innings became a pitcher's duel as neither team got on the board. Luke Williamson started for the Bulldogs, and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three hits, and one unearned run. Williamson had eight strikeouts. In the fifth inning Lee scored one, taking the lead with a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs tied it up in the sixth with a home run by Josh Bozoian. The Bulldogs fought in the eighth to scratch across one more run taking a 2-1 lead thanks to a double by Austin Zietler. However, Lee tied the game at two, and later won the game with a bases loaded single in the ninth. This was a 7-inning scheduled game. Logan Portis relieved Williamson in the fifth, inning, pitching three and a third innings with four strikeouts and one earned run. Offensively the Bulldogs were led by Austin Zeitler, who had three hits in three at bats with one RBI. Josh Bozoian went two for four scoring two runs and one RBI. Dorian Berry and Patrick Music both had one hit in three at bats.

Up next for Union will be a road game that will conclude the weekend series, Sunday, February 6 at 12 p.m. versus Lee.
