2021 GSC Volleyball Championships
PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Union University volleyball team lost to the University of Montevallo 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-14) Friday night in the Gulf South Conference quarterfinals, hosted by the University of West Florida. Union dropped to 20-13 on the season, while Montevallo improved to 20-13.
Union was the 3-seed in the tournament, its highest tournament seed since joining the GSC in 2012.Â

Darrin McClure said, "I'm so proud of what this team accomplished this season. We've battled adversity all year and I'm proud of how the team reflected Christ all year long. Tonight, Montevallo played better than we did. All the credit goes to them. I'll miss this group of seniors. They have meant a lot to me personally and have represented this program so well. I love them like my own."Â Â
The first set featured eight lead changes and eleven ties. Montevallo took a 9-6 lead early on, but Union fought back to take a 19-18 lead. Montevallo then scored six of the next seven points to take a 24-20 lead. Two kills from
Laura Rose Gray and a service ace from
Lauren Burrell put Union back within one point, but Montevallo was able to secure the set win 25-23.
The second set was closely played early on, with Union leading 6-5. Montevallo went on a 7-0 run to regain control. Union later responded with a 4-0 run, but Montevallo scored five of the last seven points for the win.
Montevallo controlled the third set and a 5-0 run near the end of the set put the Falcons up by ten. Montevallo then scored two of the next three points for the win. Â
Montevallo outhit Union .372 to .155, led in kills (45-27), aces (6-5), assists (40-24), and digs (38-21). Union led in blocks (5-4).
Union was led by Gray with nine kills and four blocks.
Emily Grace Calhoon had six kills.
Alyssa Tatsch had five kills and led with three aces and five digs.
Jordan Vick led with 24 assists.Â
