JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team lost 2-1 to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Friday night at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union dropped to 6-3-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville improved to 4-2-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in league play.
The first half was nearly completed in scoreless play. However, a goal by Alabama Huntsville scored in the 43rd minute on a header from Ethan Wilson. UAH out shot Union 13-4 in the first half, including 5-0 in shots on goal. The Chargers led 1-0 at the break.Â
Alabama Huntsville added to its lead in the 65th minute on a goal from Conner Young, assisted by Kieran Rowe.Â
Union got on the board with a goal in the in the 78th minute of play when
Gavin Scott scored a pass from
Kenny Nitzsche. The fast break goal for the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 2-1. It was goal number nine on the season for Scott. With 33 seconds left, Union scored what it thought was the tying goal, but offsides erased the goal. UAH held off Union to win 2-1.
Union was out shot 18-11 in the match, including 7-6 in shots on goal. Union got all six of its shots on goal in the second half.Â
Union was led
William Valencia with five shots, while Scott and
Stan De Vries added two each.
Botond Nemeth recorded four saves in goal for Union in 90 minutes of work.Â
Up next for Union will be a home GSC match October 10 at 3:15 p.m. versus West Alabama.Â
