West Alabama uses goal in 109th minute to clip Union men's soccer

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team lost 3-2 in double overtime to the University of West Alabama at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union dropped to 6-4-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama moved to 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.

West Alabama struck first in the match with an early goal in the 14th minute of play. The Bulldogs answered back with one of their own as James Jackson found the back of the net in the 29th minute, shortly after substituting into the game. This goal was assisted by Jorge Gutierrez. Nearing the end of the first half Jackson scored again in the 37th minute, putting Union on top 2-1 going into halftime. Both Billy Grogan, and William Valencia were credited with the assists.

During the second half West Alabama seemed to control possession. The Tigers tied the match with a goal from Reda Ikarrain in the 57th minute which was his second goal of the match. That goal was assisted by Aymane El Ammari.

The first overtime was scoreless, sending the match into double overtime. After a near scoreless second overtime, West Alabama got the golden goal when Aymane El Ammari connected on a volley and scored in the 109th minute of play.

Union was out shot 14-10 in the match, including 10-5 in shots on goal.

Union was led by James Jackson with four shots, while Gavin Scott added two. Botond Nemeth recorded six saves in goal for Union in 108:29 minutes of work.

Up next for Union will be a home matchup verses Christian Brothers University at 7:15 p.m., Friday, October 15. Despite being against a GSC foe, then match will not count as in the GSC standings.
