MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University softball team dropped the series at the University of Montevallo this weekend. Union lost 10-4 and 6-5 in a doubleheader Saturday, and then fell 10-1 in five innings in the final game of the series. Union dropped to 15-10 on the season and 4-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo improved to 13-8 overall and 8-4 in league play.
Union started teh GSC season, taking 2-of-3 from both Alabama Huntsville and Mississippi College, both nationally ranked teams. However, this weekend was unkind to Union.
In the first game, Union was down 4-0 before a
Taylor Manley single in the fourth scored the Lady Bulldogs' first run. But a four spot in the bottom of the fourth halted any momentum. Union and Montevallo both had eight hits in the game, with Montevallo making the game's only error. Union added three in the fifth started by a
Sarah Smith 2-RBI double was it was not enough.
Gabby Morris (7-2) took the loss, tossing 2.2 innings of work. Union pitchers combined for 10 walks in the game.
The second game again had Montevallo jumping out to a quick lead. Three runs in the second started the offense for the Falcons and after four innings, led 6-0. Union showed life with a rally starting with a run in the fifth on an
Alyssa Ward RBI single. Union added two more in the sixth inning when Morris doubled for an RBI and
Peyton Mathis had a sacrifice fly. Union nearly completed the full comeback with two runs in the seventh when Mathis drove in two on an single to center field. However, Union left the tying run on base. Montevallo out hit Union 9-8 and both teams committed one error.
Parker Davis (6-8) took the loss, tossing a complete game.
Game three was all Montevallo after a Smith RBI single for Union in the top of the first. Two runs in the first for the Falcons and eight in the third was all they needed for the run-rule victory.
Parker Davis took the loss in 2.1 innings of work. The three Union pitchers allowed 12 hits and walked seven with three strikeouts.
Up next for Union is a single non-conference game, Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. versus Lindenwood University at Fesmire Field.
