Mississippi College snaps home winning streak for Union women

JACKSON, Tenn.  – The Union University women's basketball team suffered an 89-63 loss to Mississippi College Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock court. Union dropped to 22-5 overall and 16-3 in the Gulf South Conference, while MC improved to 12-13 overall and 9-10 in the GSC.

Tonight's loss was the first home loss Union has suffered all season. The Lady Bulldogs had a 21 game home win streak, dating back to January 3, 2019. It was also the first double digit home loss for Union since, oddly enough, on Feb. 22, 2014 Union lost by 14 to Delta State. It marked the second worst home loss in program history (27 points to Western Kentucky, 1982-83).

Union led early, pushing the largest lead of the first quarter to seven points at 18-11 with 3:28 remaining in the quarter. At the end of the first, the score was 20-15 with the Lady Bulldogs on top. MC responded with an explosive second quarter, outscoring Union 30-8 and pushing a lead of its own to as many as 19 points. The score at halftime was 45-28 with MC in the lead. Although Union fought hard in the second half, the lead ended up being too much. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 69-51, MC. The Lady Choctaws pushed the lead to its largest differential of 26 with the final score of the game ending at 89-63.

Union was led by Jada Smith with 24 points. Emily Beard tacked on 18 with 6 rebounds, and Jaelencia Williams, who wore the jersey number 30 in honor of her senior teammate Caroline Hogue, scored 12 with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 33 percent (6-18) from long range, and 88 percent (7-8) from the free-throw line.

Mississippi College was led by Moriah Hurst with 26 points. Coco Hobson added 24 points and Mikeba Jones added 15. The Lady Choctaws shot 52 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from the 3-point line, and 83 percent (10-12) from the foul line.

Up next for Union will be the final regular-season game of the year, a road conference game, Thursday, February 27 versus Christian Brothers at 5:00 p.m.
