JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team fell 5-0 in the Gulf South Conference opener Friday versus the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Fesmire Field. Union dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in the GSC. Alabama Huntsville improved to 6-4 on the season and 3-1 in league play. 

UAH starting pitcher Tyler Self took care of Union's bats with a complete-game shutout, striking out 13 batters with no walks and three hits over his nine innings of work. The game was scoreless until the third when UAH scored twice. Two more runs in the fifth and a final run in the ninth set the final at 5-0. 

Union junior Austin Zeitler recorded the first hit of the game for either team with a single to lead of the second inning. A'Darius Pugh added a hit for Union in the third. Union did not get another hit until a single from Tyler Thomas in the ninth inning. Union had one player reach second in the game when Noah Dominquez reached on an outfield error and advance to second on the play. 

Ryan Mets (1-2) started and went five innings, with four runs on four hits, five strikeouts, and five walks. Logan Portis tossed the next three innings, allowing no runs on three hits with a strikeout. Sam McMillin tossed the ninth, allowing a run on no hits with two walks and three strikeouts. 

The two teams will complete the GSC series with a doubleheader Saturday at Union at 1 p.m.
