LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 70-54 win at the University of West Alabama Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 21-4 overall and 15-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 10-13 on the season and 5-12 in league play.
In the win, Union's
Jada Smith posted a career high 30 points. She surpassed her previous career high of 29 points scored at Alabama Huntsville earlier this season. The senior capped off a weekend where she became just the second Union women's basketball player to accumulate 1,500 career points, 500 career rebounds, and 500 career assists. She topped the final hurdle Thursday night when she topped the 500 assists mark versus Montevallo.
Union built the lead and slowly added to it through the game. The 16-point final was the largest lead of the night for Union.
West Alabama led briefly at 15-12, its largest lead, but Union answered with four straight to lead 16-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Union pushed its lead to 11 points at the half, 38-27. At the half, Union only had points from three players.
Jada Smith led with 19 in the first half, while
Jacie Higgins added 11 and
Shanique Lucas scored eight.
Union led by 10 after three quarters and then pulled away late to the 16-point win.
Union was led by Smith with 30 points six rebounds and five assists. Higgins finished with 18 points, while Lucas had 15 points. Union played without the services of two post players,
Jaelencia Williams and
Caroline Hogue. The Lady Bulldogs shot 49 percent from the field, 53 percent (8-15) from 3-point range, and 67 percent (10-15) from the free throw line.
West Alabama was led by Garrett-Hammett with 18 points and Golden with 12 points. The Tigers shot 36 percent from the field, 21 percent (3-14) from long range, and 78 percent (7-9) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be its final regular season home stand, starting with a game against league leader Lee University Thursday at 5:35 p.m. The game will also be part of the NCAA D2 Showcase, broadcast on ESPN.com and the ESPN app.
