CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University women's basketball team suffered a 69-66 overtime loss to Mississippi College Saturday afternoon. Union dropped to 14-4 overall and 8-2 in the Gulf South Conference, while MC improved to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the GSC.
This marks the first loss Union has suffered to Mississippi College since joining the GSC in 2014. This includes nine straight wins over MC before Saturday's game.
Union led early, including 15-7 after the first quarter. MC responded with an explosive second quarter, outscoring Union 20-13 and cutting the deficit to just one, 28-27 at the half. The scoring was even in the third quarter at 17-17. Union led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter (54-44 with 7:50 left), but MC put together a 13-3 run to tie the game 57-57 and force overtime.
In overtime, the Lady Choctaws scored seven points to take an early 64-57 lead. Union's
Kieli Robinson made a two-point jump shot and was fouled on the play; she put away her free throw to cut the lead to four. Union's
Patricia Tsafack then made a jump shot of her own to cut the Lady Choctaws lead to just two points. MC then made a pair of free throws at the 0:54 mark.
Jada Smith scored two points at 0:43 to again cut the lead to two, but the Lady Choctaws scored a three-pointer that the Lady Bulldogs could only answer with a last-second layup. The Lady Choctaws outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-9 in overtime to set the final score at 69-66.
Union was led by Smith with 20 points.
Jaelencia Williams scored 18 and
Leah Cauble added 9 points.
Jacie Higgins recorded a career-high 13 rebounds. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 20 percent (5-25) from long range, and 56 percent (5-9) from the free-throw line.
Mississippi College was led by Shanell Kitchens with 22 points. Matthews added 16 points and Hobson scored 9. Hobson and Jones each added 9 rebounds. The Lady Choctaws shot 34 percent from the field, 39 percent (7-18) from the 3-point line, and 67 percent (16-24) from the foul line.
Up next for Union will be a home conference game, Thursday, January 23 versus West Georgia at 5:30 p.m.
