Jackson, Tenn. - The Union men's soccer team lost a heart breaking match late in overtime to AUM 1-0. Union is now 2-2 overall, and 0-1 in the Gulf South conference. Auburn Montgomery is now 3-3 overall, and 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference.
After a strong defensive game on both sides, regulation ended at 0-0, leading to an overtime period where with only 1:09 left an AUM penalty kick from Renan Diniz resulted in the golden goal that ended the match. AUM had 10 shots in the first half, six in the second, and two in OT, resulting in 18 total with 10 on goal. Union had four shots in both the first and second half, resulting in 8 total with one on goal.
Casper Nyberg gave a healthy effort in net for Union, having seven saves in the first half, and two in the second, totaling 9 in the game, which is Nyberg's second highest save total of his career in one game. His career high came in 2017 when he stopped 13 from none other than AUM.
Up next for Union will be a home GSC match versus Spring Hill College September 27 at 7:15 p.m.
