HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University softball team earned a double-header split at No. 14 University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union fell 4-0 in game one, the rebounded for a 5-2 win in the second game. Game three of the series is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. in Huntsville.
Union is now 25-18 on the season and 12-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville moved to 32-12 overall and 16-7 in league play.
The win was the first for Union this year, and first for head coach
Mackenzie Sher over a ranked team. Union is now 1-10 versus ranked teams this season. Seven of the 10 losses to ranked teams is by three runs or less, including two by just one run.
In the second game, Union took the lead for good in the fifth inning, rallying from a 2-1 deficit. Three runs, including and RBI sacrifice bunt from
Haley Barnette put Union up 4-1. Union added a run in the seventh inning to set the final at 5-2. Union outhit UAH 13-2 in the game, while UAH committed five errors to none for Union. Seven different Lady Bulldogs recorded a hit in the game, led by
Alyssa Ward with a 4-for-4 game.
Gabby Morris (9-12) earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits and two runs with six strikeouts and five walks.
Parker Davis (2) earned the save for Union, tossing the final 1.2 innings of perfect relief with a strikeout.
Game one had UAH scoring in the second, third, and sixth innings to win 4-0, despite being outhit by Union 7-6 in the game. UAH again committed more errors, two, in favor of one for Union. Kaitlyn Kelly led Union with three hits in the game. Morris took the loss, tossing the first 2.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Davis pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing three hits, one run, with four strikeouts and four walks.
