Union softball clipped at No. 4 VSU in series sweep

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University softball team was swept at No. 4 Valdosta State University 11-2 and 7-6 in Sunday's double-header, and then lost 5-3 Monday afternoon in the third game. Union dropped to 10-9 on the season and 3-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 14-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play. 

In the first game of the series, the Blazers scored four runs in the first inning, a three-run homer scored three of those four runs. Valdosta State hit another home run in the second inning and was followed by another run before the inning was over. Union scored their two runs off a two-run homer from Haley Barnette. VSU scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the 11-2 victory early. 

Gabby Morris (5-4) took the loss for Union after pitching 3.2 innings, giving up seven runs off of eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Taylor Manley pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up four runs on three hits with three walks. 

VSU scored in the first inning of the second game Sunday. Union responded with a big second inning, scoring six runs. VSU scored a run in the third and sixth and two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game. Union's scoring drought continued into extras and Valdosta State scored the game-winner on an RBI double to finish the game 7-6. Parker Davis (3-4) took the loss for Union after throwing a complete game, giving up seven runs off of 11 hits with 11 strikeouts and seven walks. 

Valdosta State scored two runs in the first inning of Monday's game. Union responded with a home run from Haley Barnette in the top of the second inning. VSU scored two more runs in the third. An RBI from Sarah Smith scored Union's second run of the game. A homer from VSU put the Blazers up 5-2. Union scored their last run in the top of the sixth but got no closer, losing 5-3. Davis (3-5) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs after tossing five innings. Gabby Morris pitched one inning in relief. 

Up next for Union is softball's first home game against LeMoyne-Owen College, Wednesday at 2:00p.m.
