Union women top West Alabama for share of conference title

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated West Alabama 83-76 on Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court.  Union, ranked No. 6 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 5 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 25-1 overall and 17-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 11-14 overall and 8-10 in league play. 

With the win over the Tigers, the Lady Bulldogs clinched a share of the 2019 Gulf South Conference Regular Season title. 

To start the game, Union took an early lead, ending the first quarter up 27-17.  Union's largest lead of the game came early in the second quarter at 30-19, but the Tigers went on a 10-2 run to close out the half bringing the the Lady Bulldog's lead to 40-38 at the half. The Tiger's first lead of the game was with 5:30 left in the third quarter after seven unanswered points. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game up two times before the end of the quarter, but the Tigers were ahead 56-55 heading into the fourth. West Alabama held onto the lead until Union went on a 8-2 run with 6:20 left to play. The Lady Bulldogs stayed ahead to the end with the final score  at 83-76. 

West Alabama out rebounded Union 30-28, while Union forced 18 turnovers, and the Lady Bulldogs committed only eight turnovers. 

Union had five players in the double digits, led by Jada Smith with 16. Perkins had 15 points and five assists. Tiffany Rechis and Martin both had 14 points, and Childers had 13 points. The Lady Bulldogs were 41 percent from the field, 23 percent from long range (6-26), and 92 percent (23-25) from the foul line. 

Early in the game, Rechis scored her 1000th career point. She is the third Lady Bulldog to reach this milestone this season. 

West Alabama was led by J'Nyiah Daniels and Elaine Field with 19 points. Tazsa Garret-Hammett and Bria Dent had 14 points. The Tigers were 49 percent from the field, 50 percent (6-12) from three point range, and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.
