COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Union University softball team earned a split in Saturday action at the Columbus State Softball Classic. Union defeated Albany State University 10-2 in five innings in the first game. Union fell 8-0 in five innings to host Columbus State.
In the win over Albany State, Union fell behind 2-0 after the top of the first. Union responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first. Union got RBI hits from
Kaitlyn Kelley,
Haley Barnette,
Sarah Smith,
Kristen Pickens, and Abby Page. Union added a run in the second on an RBI double from Smith, then two more in the fourth when Page was hit by a pitch and
Alyssa Ward earned a walk, both with the bases loaded.
Gabby Morris (2-3) earned the win with four innings of work, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout and three walks.
Ashley Graves tossed the fifth inning, allowing just one hit with a strikeout. Morris was also 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs to lead Union. Smith, Kelley, and Page led with two RBI each.
In the late game versus Columbus State, Union was no-hit by Peyton Sorrelss (1-1), earning the perfect game with five strikeouts in the 15 batters faced. CSU scored four runs in the second and four more in the fifth to win the game 8-0.
Parker Davis (1-3) tossed 4.1 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two runs.
Gabby Morris and
Taylor Manley pitched to a combined three hitters, not recording an out.
Union will play Georgia Southwestern State and a rematch with Columbus State in the final day of the classic, Feb. 17.
