MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 81-50 win at the University of Auburn at Montgomery Monday night. Union improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 6-5 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Union used a consistent and steady offensive attack all game, scoring 20 points in each the first, third, and fourth quarters, and then 21 points in the second quarter. Union led 41-27 at the half.
The win also moved Union to 4-0 in the GSC, with all four wins coming in double figures.
AUM started the game with five straight points. Union responded with eight straight points to take the lead including a 3-point play from
Jaelencia Williams and a 3-pointer from
Emily Beard. AUM led one final time at 11-10, but Union closed the first quarter with a 10-0 run. In the second quarter, Union extended its lead to as many as 15 points in the second quarter before taking the 41-27 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the lead stayed in double figures for Union as it climbed to to a 26-point advantage, 61-35, at the end of the quarter. Union's biggest lead of the night came 81-46 with 1:12 left in the game.
Union was led by Williams with 21 points, while
Jada Smith scored 16 points. Two freshmen,
Shanique Lucas and
Kieli Robinson added 11 and 10 points respectively. Both also led with six rebounds each. Beard led Union with three 3-pointers for nine points. The Lady Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the field, 39 percent (7-18) from 3-point range, and 71 percent (10-14) from the free throw line.
AUM was led by Victoria Morales with 13 points and Jordan Brewster with nine points. The Warhawks shot 32 percent from the field, 33 percent (5-15) from long range, and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a final game before Christmas break, another GSC road game at Alabama Huntsville, Friday, December 20 at 2 p.m.
