Union volleyball wins 3-1 at Auburn Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 25-14, 30-28) victory over Auburn University at Montgomery Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 16-10 overall and 8-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 15-11 on the season and 6-5 in league play. 

Union hit .247 in the match while AUM hit .150 with AUM edging Union 65-62 in kills. Union led 4-3 in aces and dominated the blocks 17-7. Union also led 114 to 109 in digs. 

Abbie Rahn recorded 42 digs, which is a career-high for the senior. It also is fifth-most all-time in the Union record books. Union's 114 team digs are the most for the Lady Bulldogs in the Division II era. 

In the first set, Union led 18-13, but six straight points for AUM put the Warhawks up 19-18. The team went back and forth with Union getting set point at 24-23. A service error tied the match, but Union got kills from Emily Grace Calhoon and Alyssa Tatsch to win 26-24. In a closely played second set, Union led 22-21, but AUM scored the final four points of the set to tie the match 1-1. 

Union trailed once, 5-4, in the third set but quickly took control thanks to a 6-0 run and cruised to the 25-14 win. In the fourth set, AUM stormed out to an 8-3 lead. Union chipped away and took its first lead since 1-0 at 18-17. Back and forth the teams went for the rest of the way. AUM was first to set point at 24-22, but Union scored twice to tie the match. AUM had four straight set points, but Union found a way to fight each off. Union finally got to set point at 28-27. AUM tied the set at 28-28, but a kill from Meghan Delaney and an attack error from AUM gave Union the match 30-28. 

Union was led by Delaney with 18 kills. Haley Ramsey and Tatsch added 14 and 12 kills respectively. Calhoon led with a career-high nine blocks, Jordan Vick led with 48 assists, and Rahn with 42 digs. 

Up next for Union will be the first of a 3-match home stretch, Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. versus Christian Brothers. These three home matches will be the last at home for Union during the regular season.
