JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 85-63 win over Martin Methodist College Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. This was the final exhibition game before the season opens next weekend.
Union led by as many as 25 points just before the half and led 48-25 at the break. Union scored 28 points in the first quarter to lead 28-8 after 10 minutes of play. Martin Methodist outscored Union 20-13 in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, MMC had cut Union's lead down to 11 points. However, Union scored 24 fourth-quarter points to push the margin of victory up to 22 points.
Union was led by
Jaelencia Williams with 26 points and seven rebounds. The transfer shot 10-for-10 from the field and was 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.
Jada Smith added 17 points and
Emily Beard scored 10 points. Nine of the 10 Union players that entered the game scored. Smith led with eight assists. Union shot 56 percent from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from long range, and 71 percent (15-21) from the free-throw line.
Martin Methodist was led by Brooklyn Blanchard with 16 points and Faith Sherrow with 12 points. The Redhawks shot 35 percent from the field, 30 percent (7-23) from 3-point range, and 83 percent (10-12) from the free-throw line.
Up next for Union will be the season opener in the South Region Crossover Class at Delta State. Union will open with No. 15 Nova Southeastern Friday, November 8 at 5:30 p.m. Nova ended Union's season last year in the opening round of regionals.
