HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Union Lady Bulldogs saw their season come to an end Saturday evening with a 65–38 loss to Eckerd in the NCAA South Regional at SportsMED Arena in Spragins Hall. The game also marked the final contest in the storied head coaching career of longtime Union leader Mark Campbell.
Eckerd jumped out to an early advantage and controlled the pace from the opening quarter. Union struggled to find offensive rhythm early, shooting just 1-of-15 from the field in the first period as the Tritons built a 13–2 lead after ten minutes.
The Bulldogs showed life in the second quarter, using a series of three-pointers to trim the deficit. A triple from Olivia Lee and another from Morgan Escobedo helped Union cut the margin to two midway through the period. Eckerd responded with a late run, however, and carried a 28–16 lead into halftime.
Union continued to battle in the second half, getting contributions from multiple players. Lee led the Lady Bulldogs with eight points and seven rebounds, while Escobedo added seven points and five steals. Courtney Zensen and Aubrey Sorrells each chipped in six points off the bench as Union finished with 18 bench points.
Despite the effort, Eckerd maintained control throughout the final two quarters, shooting over 53 percent from the field and extending its lead down the stretch to secure the regional victory.
The loss closes the season for Union at 25–10 overall and brings an end to Campbell's remarkable tenure leading the Lady Bulldogs. Across decades on the sideline, Campbell built one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II women's basketball and collected plenty of accolades to accompany it.
While the final score did not fall in Union's favor, the game served as the closing chapter of a historic coaching career and another strong season for the Lady Bulldogs, who once again reached the NCAA Tournament and competed on the regional stage. He ends his career with an overall record of 800-130, but his impact at Union extends far beyond the wins and losses. Campbell mentored generations of student-athletes, and left a legacy that will continue to shape Union University for years to come.
