Union men's soccer ties CBU at home, 1-1

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team played Christian Brothers University to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Smith Soccer Complex. Union is now 1-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers is now 2-4-2 on the season and 1-1-2 in league play. 

The tie for Union snapped an eight match losing skid to CBU. 

Both teams did all the scoring in the first half of the match. Union took a brief lead with a goal from freshman Gavin Scott in the 17th minute of play. Andre Silva earned the assist on Scott's second goal of the season. In the 38th minute, CBU tied the match on a goal from Xavi Lao when he quickly controlled a rebounded shot from Maximillian Galizzi and found the back of the net. Union edged CBU 6-5 in shots in the first 45 minutes of play. 

In the second half, CBU took control of the shots with a 7-3 advantage in the second second half. However, neither team could score to close out regulation. In the frist overtime, CBU again had the advantage in shots, 3-1, over Union. But again, no one scored. The final overtime produced a couple of close calls for both teams, but no shots found the back of the net. CBU edged Union 4-3 in shots in the second overtime.

Christian Brothers out shot Union 19-13 in the match, including 11-1 in shots on goal. Union led CBU in corner kicks, 3-1, while CBU led in fouls, 16-11. Andre Silva led with six shots while Cole Asfour added two shots. Euan Morton spent all 110 minute in goal, recording 10 saves. 

 Up next for Union will be a home GSC match, Friday, October 5 versus Delta State University at 7:15 p.m. There will be a food truck tailgate and a corn hole tournament prior to the games.
