Union men tie Delta State 1-1 in double overtime

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team finished in a tie for the second straight match, this time in a 1-1 double overtime match versus Delta State. Union moved to 1-5-3 overall and 1-3-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State is now 1-7-1 on the season and 1-4-1 in league play. 

Delta State scored first with a goal in the ninth minute of play. Louis Ferguson, battled through traffic to but the Statesmen on top 1-0. Then just three minutes later, Union got the equalizer from Ryan Von Man, assisted by Felipe Firmino. Then for the next 99 minutes of game clock, the teams played scoreless soccer. 

Delta State out shot Union 6-4 in the first half, while Union edged DSU 7-6 in the second half. Both teams managed two shots each in the first overtime, while Union dominated the final overtime 5-1 in shots. Union finished the match out shooting DSU 18-15, with DSU leading 7-5 in shots on goal. 

Union had 10 corner kicks to just four from the Statesman, while DSU led 23-15 in fouls. 

Gavin Scott led Union with six shots, while five different individuals including Scott had one shot on goal each. Euan Morton, the reigning GSC Defender of the Week, recorded six saves in his 110 minutes of work. 

Up next for Union will be a home match, October 7 versus Mississippi College at 3:15 p.m.
