Union men's soccer earns 1-0 win at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win at the University of Alabama in Huntsville Tuesday afternoon. Union improved to 1-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 4-3-1 on the season and 2-1-1 in league play.

It was the first win of the season for Union, and the first GSC loss for UAH. The match was also originally scheduled for September 23 in Jackson, but weather forced the change in date and location.

Union head coach Steven Cox said, "It was a great team win today. The guys worked incredibly hard and defended very well. It was great to get a shutout. We moved the ball very well and created a lot of good chances. I know that the guys are very hungry and are committed to reaching our team goals."

The first half included several scoring chances for both teams. UAH led Union 12-7 on shots, including 5-2 in shots on goal. However, neither team could find the back of the net. Union's Euan Morton earned five first half saves.

Union was able to break the scoreless tie with the match's first goal in the 64th minute of play. Andre Silva took a pass from Cole Asfour to give Union the lead.

Union had seven shots in the second half, just as they did in the first. However, the Union defense held UAH to just six shots in the final 45 minutes of play. Morton added another save to finish with six for the match. Union closed the shots gap to 18-14 for the match. UAH led 8-2 in corner kicks, while also edging Union 10-9 in fouls.

Gavin Scott led Union with four shots, while William Valencia added three shots. Silva and Asfour added two shots each.

Up next for Union will be a home GSC match, September 30 at 3:15 p.m. versus Christian Brothers. The promotions for the match will be Alumni Day and Hawaiian Day. Also, Wednesday's non-conference tilt versus Florida National has been canceled.
