Union men's soccer drops heart breaker to West Alabama in OT, 2-1

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team narrowly missed their first win of the season in a heart breaking 2-1 overtime loss to the University of West Alabama. Union dropped to 0-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama, who is receiving votes in the latest Division II National Coaches Poll, improved to 4-1-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play. 

Union scored the first goal of the match in the 11th minute of play. AJ Morgado scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Cole Asfour. It was just 11 minutes later when West Alabama got the equalizer from Ali Brado, assisted by Adam Zayed. The score was 1-1 at the half. Both teams had five shots in the first half. 

Union out shot West Alabama in the second half, 7-4 but could not break the tie. Andre Silva for Union took a free kick just outside the box and hit the crossbar, bouncing off for the missed opportunity. 

In the first overtime, West Alabama wasted no time getting the golden goal just over a minute into the extra period. Brador got his second goal of the game with the assist from Harrison Roberts. 

Union out shot West Alabama 12-10, with the Tigers edging Union 4-3 in shots on goal. West Alabama led 7-4 in corner kicks and fouls, 11-6. 

Up next for Union will be a home GSC match versus Alabama Huntsville September 23 at 3:15 p.m.
