Union women shoot past Clark Atlanta in region opener

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball posted a 94-80 win over Clark Atlanta University Friday night at Fred Delay Gymnasium in the opening round of the NCAA D2 National Championships Region Tournament. Union, the top seed and host for the third time in four years, improved to 29-3. Eighth-seeded Clark Atlanta ended their season at 20-9. 

Union improved to 3-2 in NCAA National Tournament games, all in region rounds. 

Union head coach Mark Campbell said, "We made shots early and that allowed everyone's talents to be on display tonight. I'm proud of the effort we gave tonight on offense and defense. We've been more focused as a team the last several games". 

Union scored the first two points of the game on a pair of free throws by Sara Lytle. Clark Atlanta answered with a 3-pointer to lead 3-2. Union's Tiffany Rechis followed with 3-pointer, but again, the Panthers hit another to lead 6-5. Rechis and Chelsey Shumpert then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Union the lead for good. Union led 27-12 at the end of the first quarter. Union held their largest lead of the first half at the break, 48-26. 

Rechis led Union with 14 points in the first half with four 3-pointers. 

In the second half, Union led by 40 points, 76-36 at the end of three quarter. Union led by as many as 47 points in the game, 94-47, before taking the 94-50 final. 

Union was led by Rechis and Shumpert with 20 points each. Lytle added 14 points Six other Lady Bulldogs scored with four getting at least seven points in the game. Rechis recorded her first career double-double with 10 rebounds. Union shot 55 percent from the field, 48 percent (11-23) from 3-point range, and 85 percent (17-20) from the free throw line. 

Clark Atlanta was led by Naomi Holloway with 15 points and Marissa Mandeldove with 13 points. The Panthers shot 27 percent from field, 23 percent (6-26) from long range, 56 percent (10-18) from the free throw line. 

Up next for Union will be a matchup versus the 4-seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in the semifinals, Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.
