CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University baseball team lost a pair of games Saturday at Mississippi College, 3-2 in game one and 11-5 in game two. Union won the Friday matchup 11-6, but dropped the 3-game weekend series. Union dropped to 11-22 overall and 6-12 in the Gulf South Conference. MC improved to 22-8 on the season and 11-6 in league play.
Mississippi College scored a run in the first and two more in the third inning. All three MC runs came from RBI hits from Crim. The score stayed 3-0 until the ninth when Union got two runs on a 2-out single from Caleb DeMarigny. Union left the tying run on second.
Union was out hit 8-6 in the game. The Bulldogs were led by Nolen Milton with two hits, while DeMarigny's two RBIs were the only RBI in the game for Union. Marty Coursey (0-3) tossed a complete game in the hard luck loss. He allowed just the three early runs, scattering eight hits with five strikeouts in eight innings.
Game two started with a run for each team in the first inning. Union scored on a sacrifice fly from David Robins. However, Mississippi College took control with six runs in the third inning and another run in the fourth inning. Union did not stay down, cutting the MC lead to 8-5 after two runs in each the fifth and sixth innings. A Hayden Lewis double in the fifth drove in a pair. In the sixth, an RBI single from Jesse Kelley and a sacrifice fly from Zane Phillips got the Bulldogs back within striking distance. However, the Choctaws struck for three runs in bottom of the sixth to seal the win.
The Choctaws out hit Union 11-8 in the game. Union was led by Chase Diggs with two hits and Lewis with two RBI. Scott Shearer (4-6) took the loss, lasting just 2.1 innings and giving up six runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Kory Pollard and Skyler Harrison combined for the final 3.2 innings in relief.
Up next for Union will be week with four home games, starting Tuesday at 4 p.m. versus Henderson State (Ark.).
