Montevallo sweeps Union softball

MONTEVALLO, Ala.- The Union University softball team was swept in the weekend series at the University of Montevallo. Montevallo won the first game of the Friday double-header 5-4 and the second game 2-0. Falcons then took the Saturday single game, 11-5. 

The Lady Bulldogs dropped to 7-12 overall and 2-9 in the Gulf South Conference. The Falcons improved to 17-5 overall and 7-4 in conference play. 

In the first game, Montevallo had a early lead in the bottom of the second following a home run. The Falcons extended the lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Union scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth. Parker Davis hit a two-run home run in addition to a couple runs scoring on wild pitches. In the bottom of the fourth, Montevallo tied it up, and they took the lead again in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 5-4. Taylor Manley (1-1) took the loss after tossing two innings in relief. She gave up two runs, six hits, and had three strikeouts. Gabby Morris pitched two innings to start the game. She gave up three runs, three hits, and had three strikeouts.  Union had six hits, Morris had two for the Lady Bulldogs. 

In the second game, each team was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Falcons scored the game's only runs. Parker Davis (0-5) took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings. She gave up two runs, seven hits, and had one strikeout. Taylor Griffith tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Union had four hits with four different players having one hit. 

In the final game of the series, Union took the lead in the top of the first with a home run from Morris. Peyton Mathis scored on an RBI from Myranda Bailiff in the top of the second. The Falcons tied the game up in the bottom of the second, 2-2. Sam McDaniel scored on an RBI from a Morris' second home run of the game, giving Union a 4-2 lead.  The Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Montevallo had a grand slam to go up 10-4. The last run of the game for Montevallo came in the bottom of the fifth. Union added a run in the seventh on and RBI single from Sara Smith to set the final at 11-5. Davis (0-6) took the loss in 1.1 inning of relief work. She gave up two runs, three hits, and had one strikeout. Five pitchers pitched for Union with Taylor Griffith getting the start, tossing 1.2 innings. Union had nine hits. Morris led with three hits, three RBI, and two home runs. 

Up next for Union, is a home series against Lee University on March 17-18.
