JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball posted a pair of victories Friday in the final day of the Union Classic. Union defeated Bethel 17-1 in five innings in the first game. Union then knocked off LeMoyne-Owen 13-0 in five innings in the second game. Union improved to 3-3 on the season, while both Bethel and LeMoyne-Owen dropped to 0-2 on the season.
In the win over Bethel, Union got four runs in the first, nine runs in the second, and four more in the fourth. Union pounded out 21 hits in the win. Gabby Morris led Union with a 4-for-4 day, scoring three runs and tallying four RBI. Sarah Smith, Samantha McDaniel, and Emily Bennett each added three hits in the game. Haley Barnett added four RBI as well. Morris (2-1) earned the win, going four innings, allowing one hit and no runs with six strikeouts. Parker Davis tossed the final inning, allowing a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The second game was more of the same for Union's offense. Union hit three home runs in the game, all coming in the first two innings. Morris and Peyton Mathis each had 2-run home runs in the five run first inning for Union. Then Smith added a solo home run in Union's four run second inning. Union added four more runs in the third highlighted by a Mathis 3-RBI triple. Union pitchers Taylor Griffith (1-0) and Taylor Manley combined for a no-hitter. Griffith tallied seven strikeouts in three innings of work, while Manley had four strikeouts. Neither pitcher walked a batter.
Up next for Union will be three GSC games in the GSC Opening Weekend Festival in Montgomery, Ala. Feb. 17-18. Union faces West Georgia, Auburn-Montgomery and North Alabama. Union's next home game is versus Shorter University, February 24-25.
