No. 14/6 Union women shoot past Shorter, 83-61

ROME, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 83-61 win at Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union, ranked No. 14 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 23-2 overall and a league best 16-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 6-17 overall and 4-13 in league play. 

Union has clinched at least a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the GSC Tournament and will host a quarterfinal round game, Tuesday, February 27 at 6 p.m. Union has a one game lead in the standings over North Alabama with a 15-2 league record. 

Union scored the first six points of the game with two points each from Tiffany Rechis, Sara Lytle, and AnnaLea Little. Shorter cut the Union lead to 6-5, but Union pushed back out to a lead of seven, 15-8 with just under two minutes left in the quarter. Union led 17-12 at the end of one. 

Shorter cut their deficit to just two points, 19-17, early in the second quarter. However, Union scored seven straight points on a 4-point play from Little and a 3-pointer from Rechis. Then, with 5:37 left in the first half, Union extended their lead to double figures and never looked back. By the end of the half, Union led by 18 points, 43-25. 

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Rechis and Little to start the second half put Union up by 24 points, 49-25. Union led by as many as 27 points in the third quarter, before taking a 69-45 lead into the fourth. 

In the four quarter, Union matched their largest lead of 27 points once. The Lady Bulldogs cruised to the 83-61 final. 

Union had five players in double figures, led by Little with 15 points. Sara Lytle added 14 points, Rechis scored 13 points, while Chelsey Shumpert and Bria Gaines added 10 points each. Union hit 10 3-pointers in the game with four coming from Little and three from Rechis. Union shot 58 percent from the field, 42 percent (10-24) from long range, and 88 percent (7-8) from the free throw line. 

Shorter was led by Jasmine Gaines and Jackie Hudson with 11 points. BreAnna Thompson and Tatum Ragsdale added 10 points each. The Hawks shot 39 percent from the field, 33 percent (8-24) from 3-point range, and 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line.
