JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 95-74 win over Auburn Universty Montgomery Thursday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn Montgomery dropped to 4-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play.Â
After an evenly played first eight minutes of play, Union used a quick 6-0 run to push a 17-14 lead to 23-14. Up 39-28 with 4:11 left, Union scored 11 straight points including two three-pointers from JC Hawkins and a 3-point play from Tylandrius Parks. Union pushed its lead to as many as 22 points just before the half, 52-30, before taking a 50-30 lead into the locker room.Â
Union, playing without its top two scorers due to injury (Tyree Boykin and Terrandus Smith). The Bulldogs led for all but 14 seconds of the first half and shot a blazing 61 percent from the field and 54 percent (7-13) from long range.Â
In the second half, Union extended its lead to as many as 26 points, 68-42, with 12:28 left to play following another 3-pointer from Hawkins. AUM got as close as 18 points, 77-59, with 6:15 left, but Union pushed the lead back to over 22 with 7-3 run, all points coming from LiDonta Hicks-Gentry. AUM made another late run to get as close as 14 points, 86-72, with 1:27 left. But Union got five straight points from Hick-Gentry, including his third 3-pointer to put the Bulldogs up 91-72. Union cruised to a 21 point win.Â
Six players went for double-figures for Union, led by Hick-Gentry with a career-high 23 points, including 3-of-6 from long range. Bryson Butler scored 16, Peyton Stovall and JC Clausi added 14 points each, Hawkins scored 12 points on four 3-pointers, while Tylandrius Parks scored 11 points. Union shot 54 percent from the field, 50 percent (12-24) from 3-point range, and 92 percent (23-25) from the free throw line.Â
AUM was led by Bell with 23 points and Davis with 10 points. The Warhawks shot 38 percent from the field, 26 percent (7-27) from long range, and 69 percent (11-16) from the free throw line.Â
AUM edged Union 37-35 in rebounds, while Union held the offensive rebound edge 12-11. Union forced 14 AUM turnovers and committed 12 turnovers.Â
