JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team fell to Shorter University 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 15-7) Saturday night. The Lady Bulldogs finished their season 7-26 overall and 3-13 in the Gulf South Conference. The Hawks finished 12-16 overall and 8-9 in conference play.
Union jumped out to an early lead over Shorter in the first set, 6-2. Shorter rallied back to tie the set at 8-8, but was never able to gain the lead. Union kept the lead to finish the set 25-21.
In the second set, Union was ahead 6-2 before Shorter began to battle back. The Hawks scored six straight points to take the lead. Shorter held the lead the rest of the way and defeated Union in the second set, 25-21.
Union and Shorter battled back and forth in the beginning of the third set. Union scored three consecutive points followed by four straight points to take a 12-6 lead. Union continued to play well with the lead to win, 25-19.
The fourth set was another evenly played set. The teams kept it close until Shorter was able to score three straight points to take a 22-17 lead. That was enough of a cushion to win 25-20.
Shorter dominated the fifth set scoring five straight points. Shorter went on two 3-point runs to jump up 13-4. Shorter cruised to the match clinching win, 15-7.
Union was led by Meghan Delaney with 16 kills, Abbie Rahn with 35 digs, Delaney Peterson with 10 blocks and Kristen Goggin with two aces.
