JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team fell 83-74 to Southern Arkansas University Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped to 4-2 overall, while SAU improved to 5-1.
The first half was a fast paced 20 minutes of basketball with SAU clinging to a 46-42 lead at the break. Both teams shot well with the Muleriders hitting 56 percent of their field goals, including 40 percent from long range. Union was 50 percent from both the field and behind the arc. Union led by as many as four in the first half, while SAU led by as many as eight points.
The second half slowed a little with SAU winning the second half 37-32. Union rallied to lead 48-47 on a layup from Samory Gueye. SAU regained the lead and went up by six, but Union rallied again. JC Hawkins hit a back-door layup to put Union up 60-59 with 9:08 left. Union led for the final time 66-64 with 5:23 left. Union was down just two points 72-70 with 3:12 left in the game. However, SAU was 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to seal the win.
After hitting eight 3-pointers in the first half, Union was held to just 1-of-14 from long range in the second half.
Gueye led Union with 21 points while JC Hawkins scored 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from long range. Bryson Butler added 14 points. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 30 percent (9-30) from three-point range, and was a perfect 21-of-21 from the free throw line. Union missed the program record of 23-of-23 set back in 1997.
Union was out rebounded 39-27, including 12-6 on the offensive glass. Union committed 10 turnovers to just six from SAU. The game featured 21 lead changes and nine ties.
Southern Arkansas was led by CJ Elkins with 23 points. Wesley Nosakhare added 11 points and Jalen Brooks scored 10 points. The Muleriders shot 45 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-24) from 3-point range, and 76 percent (16-21) from the free throw line.
