Union men rally for 77-70 win over Trevecca

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 77-70 win over Trevecca Nazarene University Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union stayed perfect at 4-0, while Trevecca Nazarene dropped to 0-2. 

Union's Terrandus Smith, a former Jackson South Side High School standout scored 26 of his 29 points in the second half. His only points of the first half brought Union to within two points, 8-6, after Trevecca opened the game with an 8-0 run. Union caught back up and for the rest of the half, the game was back and forth. The scored was even, 33-33, at the break. 

Smith opened the second half up for Union with five straight points of his own to get Union started. TNU answered and extended its lead to the largest of the game for either team, eight points, 55-47, with 12:10 left in the game. Smith again answered with a personal 5-0 run to start the Union rally. Union regained the lead, but again TNU pulled back ahead by five points, 63-58, with 6:41 left. 

Union rallied one more time and a layup from Tevin Florent gave the Bulldogs the lead for good, 65-63. After a 15-2 run for Union, Union held its largest lead of the game, 73-65, with 48 seconds left following a 3-pointer from Tyree Boykin. Union sank its free throws down the stretch to seal the 77-70 win. 

Union dominated the offensive glass 19-3 in the game and 43-26 in overall rebounds. 

Union was led by Smith with 29 points, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Boykin added 15 points with three 3-pointers. Nine different players scored in the game for Union, while six different players hit a 3-pointer. Tylandrius Parks led with a game-high 12 rebounds. Union shot 39 percent from the field, 29 percent (12-41) from 3-point range, and 65 percent (15-23) from the free throw line. 

Trevecca was led by Jaquez Gilbert and Evan Ragsdale with 14 points each. Austin Wills added 11 points and Reed Smith scored 10. The Trojans shot 49 percent from the field, 44 percent (16-36) from long range, and 67 percent (2-3) from the free throw line. 

Up next for Union will be a road game at McKendree University, Tuesday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m.
