JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team posted a 94-64 win over Cumberland University. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0 on the season, while Cumberland (5-0) played this game as an exhibition.
The reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week led Union with 15 points in just 26 minutes of play. He was 5-of-9 from long range. Tylandrius Parks scored 14 points, on a perfect shooting night, going 5-of-5 from the field, 1-of-1 from 3-point range, and 3-of-3 from the free throw line. Payton Stovall added 14 points and Samory Gueye added 12 points.
Union hit 11 3-pointers in the win, shooting 44 percent from long range. The Bulldogs were 56 percent from the field and 73 percent (13-18) from the charity stripe.
Cumberland scored first in the game with a 3-pointer. The Phoenix led for the majority of the first eight minutes of play, matching their largest lead of four, 17-13 with just over 12 minutes left in the half. Union rallied and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer from JC Hawkins with 11:01 left in the first half. Union held their largest lead of the half at the break, 44-31. Union dominated the second half, outscoring Cumberland 50-33. Union's largest lead of 32 points was 92-61 late in the game.
Cumberland was led by Ty Sean Powell with 16 points. The Phoenix shot 39 percent from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from 3-point range, and 86 percent (12-14) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be a Saturday afternoon home game, November 17 versus Trevecca Nazarene at 4 p.m.
