MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Union University men's soccer team pulled away from Auburn University at Montgomery 5-1 in Thursday night action. The third straight win for Union improved the Bulldogs to 4-8-3 on the season and 2-6-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Auburn-Montgomery dropped to 3-11-2 overall and 2-6-2 in league play.
The five unanswered goals for Union matched a season high (5 vs. Freed-Hardeman), and the most goals for the Bulldogs in a GSC match this season. Union has won three straight matches and are 4-3-2 over the last nine.
Auburn-Montgomery scored the match's first goal in the 10th minute of play on a shot from William York, assisted by Billy Murphy. In the 27th minute, Union tied the match at 1-1 on
David Hurtado's second goal of the season.
Gavin Scott recorded the assist. Then just eight minutes later, Union took the lead for good, 2-1, in the 35th minute on
Andre Silva's second goal of the year, assisted by
Billy Grogan. Both teams managed seven first half shots apiece, including three shot-on-goal each.
The score stayed 2-1 for the first 32 minutes of play. Union then exploded for three goals in the final 22 minutes of the match.
AJ Morgado scored his fourth goal of the season in the 78th minute, Hurtado added his second goal of the match in the 87th minute, and Silva scored his second goal of the match in the 90th minute.
Cole Asfour added the assist on Hurtado's second goal.
Union finished the match leading AUM 18-14 in shots, including 9-5 in shots on goal. Union led 7-4 in corner kicks, saves were even at four each, while AUM led in fouls, 14-7.
Hurtado and Silva led Union with four shots each.
Casper Nyberg recorded four saves in his 90 minutes of work in net.
Up next for Union will be it's final game of the season, a road contest at Montevallo, Saturday, October 27 at 3:30 p.m.
