Perkins’ 32 points propels No. 19 Union past UAH 74-67

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University women's basketball team earned a 74-67 win at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union, ranked No. 19 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 8 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 10-5 on the season and 4-4 in league play.

A three pointer from Union's AnnaLea Little followed by a 3-point play from Jada Perkins gave the Lady Bulldogs a 6-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Union jumped out to a 9-2 lead and led again 13-6 before UAH tied the game 16-16. The home Chargers looking for the upset pull ahead of Union 22-18 for their largest lead of the game with 6:52 left in the half. The teams changed leads eight times in the second quarter before Union closed out the half with a pair of layups from Perkins to take a 34-32 lead at the break.

Perkins added another 3-point play to start the third quarter, matching Union's largest lead of the game to this point at seven, 37-32. Union maintained a small single digit lead the rest of the way. UAH got as close as one point, 47-46, with 2:51 left in the third quarter. However, Union continued to stay just ahead of the Chargers. Then, in the final minute of play, Union managed to extend their lead to a game-high nine points, 71-62, with 25 seconds left in the game. Union ended with a 74-67 win.

Union was led by Perkins with a career high 32 points. She was 10-of-13 from the field and 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Reigning GSC Player of the Week Chelsey Shumpert added 14 points. Kyvin Goodin-Rogers posted her best line in her three games with Union, adding seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 24 percent (6-25) from long range, and 70 percent (16-23) from the free throw line.

Union out rebounded UAH 38-33 on the night, including a dominant 11-2 showing on the offensive glass.

Alabama Huntsville had five players in double figures led by Elder and Tipton with 12 points each. Sanders and Bolton scored 11 each, while Foster added 10 points. The Chargers shot 49 percent from the field, 38 percent (8-21) from long range, and 61 percent (11-18) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be a pair of home games starting Saturday, January 13 at 2 p.m. versus West Florida.
