JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated Lee University 66-59 Saturday afternoon at Fred Delay Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 12 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 4 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, improved to 20-1 and 13-0 in conference play. The Lady Flames, receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 23 in the D2SIDA Media Poll, dropped to 17-4 on the season and 10-3 in conference play.
The 20th win for Union was the 15th straight win of the season, while snapping an 8-game winning streak for Lee. Union also extended both their home winning streak and GSC regular season winning streak to 17 straight dating back to last season.
Carrie Cheeks opened the game for the Lady Flames with quick layup, and led 4-2 after after their second possession. Chelsey Shumpert started an 8-0 run for at the 8:04 mark to give Union a 10-4 lead. Union maintained the lead for the remainder of the game. Union held their largest lead of the first quarter at at the end, 18-11, following a 3-pointer from Sara Lytle.
Jada Perkins scored the first six points of the second quarter for Union, extending the lead to 13 points. Abby Bertram then hit back-to-back three-pointers that started a 9-0 run for the Lady Flames. Shumpert stopped the run with a layup at the 2:53 mark. Union led by seven points late in the half, but Erin Walsh hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Lee, bringing the Lady Flames back within four points at the half, 31-27.
Shumpert opened the second half for Union with a pair of free throws. Lee's first points of the half came at the 7:29 mark with a layup from Cheeks, but Shumpert responded with a three-pointer, bringing Union's lead back up to nine points.
With 18 seconds left in the third quarter, AnnaLea Little hit a shot from beyond the arc to make the score 48-35, matching Union's largest lead of the game at 13 points. Maddie Long made layup up at the buzzer to bring the Lady Flames back within 11 points at the end of three quarters.
Taylor Boggess opened the fourth quarter for Lee with a shot from beyond the arc. Union extended their lead again to as many as 13 points, 53-40, with 6:50 left in the game. However, Lee kept coming back. Lee got as close as six points in the final quarter, the latest coming 62-56, with 31 seconds left. Union was 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game to seal the 66-59 win.
Union was led by Shumpert with 33 points, exactly half of Union's 66 points. Perkins had 16 points with six assists and seven steals. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 25 percent (5-20) from beyond the arc, and 85 percent (23-27) from the foul line.
Union was out rebounded by Lee 32-23, including 10-4 on the offensive glass. However, Union won the turnover battle, forcing 20 Lee turnovers and committing just 11. Union scored 20 points off turnovers.
Cheeks led Lee with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Roddy had 11 points. Lee was 37 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from beyond the arc, and shot a perfect 9-of-9 from the foul line.
