Union men drop home game to Lee, 60-51

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team fell to Lee University 60-51 Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Bulldogs dropped to 9-12 and 3-10 in conference play. The Flames improved to 12-8 on the season and 7-6 in conference play. 

Levi Woods opened up the game for Lee with a three-pointer, but Tyree Boykin responded with a quick layup for Union. Union took their first lead, 6-5, at the 17:59 mark with a shot from beyond the arc from JC Hawkins. The Flames were able to take back the lead four minutes later with a three-pointer from Cody Jones. 

The two teams continued to play back and forth throughout the half with seven ties and seven lead changes. Union's largest lead of the first half was four points at the 5:26 mark after a pair of free throws from Todd Barnes. Boykin hit a three at the 1:15 mark to give Union the lead at 30-29, but Isaac Merian made a layup the next possession to put the Flames ahead before going into the half, 31-30. 

In the second half, Lee led for the majority of time. Union stayed close and with 14:30 left, Todd Barns gave Union a brief 36-35 lead. Lee again took a small lead. Union tied the game 45-45 with 7:39 left on a layup from Pedro Da Silva and a free throw from Charlie Wilson gave Union a 46-45 lead with 7:13 left. Lee responded with a 9-0 run to take control of the game. Lee outscored Union 15-5 over the final seven minutes of play. 

Union was led by Boykin with 18 points and Wilson with nine points and 12 rebounds. Union shot 43 percent from the field, 33 percent (5-15) from long range, and 60 percent (9-15) from the free throw line. 

Lee was led by Chase Cullen with 16 points and Jones with 14 points. The Flames shot 40 percent from the field, 24 percent (5-21) from 3-point range, and 57 percent (12-21) from the free throw line.
