UAH slips past Union men 81-75

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team was defeated by the University of Alabama in Huntsville 81-75 Thursday evening at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. The Bulldogs dropped to 9-13 overall and 3-11 in the Gulf South Conference. The Chargers improved to 14-8 on the season and 7-7 in conference play. 

Nick Velasquez opened the game with a 3-pointer for the Bulldogs. Union jumped to a 10-4 lead in the first four minutes of play. UAH tied the ball game with a layup from Sam Orf and then both teams scored on three straight possessions. The teams were tied at 16-16 for two minutes until Union went on a seven point run. Union continued to add to the lead and went up 46-34 going into the locker room. Union was 8-for-17 (47%) form 3-point range in the first half. 

UAH scored the first two points of the second half before Velasquez answered with a bucket from behind the arc. The teams swapped baskets until the Chargers went on a 14-0 run, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. KC Goodwin stopped the run with a layup that started a 10-0 run for Union. A layup from Tyree Boykin and two three's from Velasquez gave Union the lead again, 63-58, with 7:59 left in the game. However, the Chargers outscored Union 23-12 in the final 7:36 of play to rally for the win. A 3-pointer form Boykin got Union to within four points, 79-75, but the Bulldogs did not score again. 

Union was led by Todd Barnes with 16 points. Velasquez had 14 points, and Goodwin had 12 points. Boykin added 10 points. Union was 41 percent from the field, 41 percent (13-31) from three-point range, and 69 percent (16-23) from the foul line. 

UAH was led by Ward with 24 points. Finley had 15 points, and Owens had 13 points. Orf added 10 points. UAH was 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (8-20) from three-point range, and 79 percent (19-24) from the foul line.
