No. 3 Columbus State tops Union women's soccer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Union University women's soccer team fell 7-0 on a neutral field to No. 3 Columbus State University Saturday afternoon at Bellarmine University's field. This was the season opener for Union after their Thursday night game was postponed due to rain. 

Columbus State show early why the coaches put the Cougars at No. 3 in the latest Division II National Coaches' Poll. CSU scored first in the fourth minute on a goal from Olivia Jarrell, assisted by Tehgan Anguilm. In the 16th minute, Cassandra Wade added a goal, assisted by Maddy Peterson. In the 29th minute, Riley Clark scored on a pass from Kimmy May. in the 35th minute, Parker Morgan scored on an assist from Angelica Tabares. In the 41st minute, Meghan Cottingham got a goal from on apass from Flo Spano. Then, just before the half, Clark added her second goal of the half on another assist from Spano. The score was 6-0 at the half. In the second half, the lone goal came from CSU's Anguilm who got her second goal on a penalty kick in the 69th minute. 

Shelby High led Union with two shots, one on-goal, while three other players had one shot each. CSU's top shooter was Jarrell with three shots, two on-goal.

Union was out shot by the Cougars 21-5 in the game, 10-1 in shots-on-goal. Union keeper Kristen Francis had three saves and allowed six goals in her 61 minutes of work to start the match. Anna Venckus played in goal the final 29 minutes, allowing one goal with no saves. Columbus State's one save was by Adianna Ortiz who was in goal for the first half. Bria Riancho was not test in her 45 minutes of work in the second half. 

Up next for Union will be a pair of road GSC matches with the first stop at West Georgia, Friday, September 8 at 4 p.m.
