Union men's soccer drops GSC match at Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team fell 2-0 at Christian Brothers University in the first Gulf South Conference match of the year for the Bulldogs. Union dropped to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play. CBU improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the GSC.

Neither team scored in the first half with CBU holding the advantage on shots, 8-3. Shots picked up in the second half for both teams, but especially for the Bulldogs. Union and CBU both fired off nine shots each in the second half. Union produced several good opportunities, but just could not find the back of the net. This was the first time in four matches this season thay Union did not score.

Christian Brothers got the match's first goal in the 66th minute of play from Brendan Bennett on a penalty kick. That goal proved to be the game-winner but with just over five minutes left in the match, CBU's Zavi Lao scored on a pass from Djordje Djordjovic to set the final at 2-0.

Union head coach Steven Cox said, "It was disappointing not to get a result tonight. We played well enough to get one. We created three full chances and needed to have a little more composure in those moments. I was proud that the guys fought for 90 minutes. We will learn from this and prepare for our first home conference match Friday."

William Valencia led Union with three total shots while Andre Silva, Paul Langford, and AJ Morgado each added two apiece. Casper Nyberg played all 90 minute in goal, earning eight saves.

Up next for Union will be the first of two straight GSC home matches Friday, September 22 at 7:15 p.m. versus Shorter (Ga.).
