Union baseball drops regular season finale

MARTIN, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team fell 9-2 at the University of Tennessee Martin Tuesday night in their final regular season game of the year. Union dropped to 32-18 on the season, while UT Martin improved to 20-23. Union won the previous meeting with UTM April 25 at home, 12-6. 

UT Martin wasted no time in taking control with four runs in the first and two more in the second. All six runs came off Union starter Landon Walker (0-3). Walker allowed six runs on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout over 1.2 innings of work. 

Union got on the board in the third when Austin Orr hit second second home run of the year, a solo shot to right field. UT Martin answered with an unearned run in the fourth and then two more runs in the sixth to let the score at 9-1. 

The Bulldogs of Union got their final run in the seventh on a solo home from Dylan Moore to left field. It was his fifth home run of the year. 

Union managed six hits in the game, one each from six different players. UT Martin got 14 hits off of six pitchers for Union. Joe Hudson, Walter Rook, JD Fuzzell and Andrew Wilson combined to toss the final three innings of scoreless relief for Union. Sam Folks (2-0) earned the win for the Skyhawks, tossing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. 

Union now turns their focus to the Gulf South Conference Tournament that starts Saturday, May 6. Fifth-seeded Union will play 4-seed Valdosta State Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Cleveland, Miss. Union then plays top-seeded and host Delta State Sunday at 5 p.m. and 8-seeded Alabama Huntsville Monday at 10 a.m. The two pool play winners will face off in Tuesday's championship game at 6 p.m.
