Union baseball sweeps Saturday double-header at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University baseball team posted their second and third straight wins with a double-header sweep at Valdosta State University. Union rallied for a game one win, 2-1, then took the second game 5-2. The Bulldogs improved to 20-5 overall and 9-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 16-9 on the season and 8-6 in league play.
 
The first game was pitchers dual between Union's JR Miller (4-0) and Hunter Jones (3-1) of Valdosta State. VSU scored the games first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Union did not get their first hit of the game until a David Robins single in the six. Union score their first and only runs of the game in the seventh inning on a 2-RBI double by Zach Wylie. Both teams ended the game with four hits. Miller tossed eight innings, allowing on run on four hits with nine strikeouts. Jones took the hard luck loss for VSU, going six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with 12 strikeouts. Union's Austin Kitterman got his third save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.
 
Union's Nolen Milton had his 22-game hitting streak snapped and his 23-game on base record snapped in the game one win. His 22-game hitting streak tied a Union record, getting a hit in all but the first game of the year before today. He had also reached base safely in the first 23 games of the year.
 
Game two started with Union scoring first, in the first, with a two run home run from Dylan Moore. Milton scored after being hit by a pitch. Milton started a new hitting streak in the game as well with a single in the seventh inning. VSU got a solo home run in the third and tied the game with another solo home run in the fourth. Union continued the home run trend when Robins put Union up 3-2 with a solo home run in the fifth. Union added two more runs in the seventh for insurance on a sacrifice fly from Zach Phillips and a RBI single from Ryne Roper. Teddie Christie (6-1) got the win for Union, tossing four innings, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Marty Coursey tossed the final three innings of the game, allowing one hit, no runs and four strikeouts for his first save of the year. Austin Hamilton (2-3) took the loss. Union finished with 10 hits in the game with Moore going 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Bulldogs. Roper added two hits in his four at bats. Union pitching allowed just three hits in game 2.
 
Union will go for the sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. at Valdosta State.
