CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball had their season come to an end at Lee University with a 72-58 loss. The loss came in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Union finished with a record of 17-12, while Lee advances with a 20-9 record. It was just the third time in program history (since 1972-73) that Union has 10 or more losses in a season and the first time in
Mark Campbell's 18 year career.
Union is one of only two schools (Delta State) that has send both the men's and women's basketball teams to the GSC Tournament in the last three years. Union has done so in each of the three seasons they have been eligible.
Union fell behind early as Lee scored the game's first 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs could not recover. Lee pushed out to a 19-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Lee continued to build their lead and with 3:26 left in the first half, held their largest lead of the half at 29 points, 38-9. Union went into the locker room down 22 points, 38-22.
Lee extended their lead to 62-35 at the end of the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, Lee pushed out to a 31 point lead, 66-35, their largest of the game with 9:18 left to play. Union outscored Lee 23-10 in the fourth quarter to set the final scored at 72-58.
Union was led by
Sara Lytle with 17 points while
Jada Smith added 13 points. Union shot just 35 percent from the field, 29 percent (6-21) from 3-point range and 74 percent (14-19) from the free throw line. Union committed 15 turnovers and had 28 rebounds, seven offensive.
Lee was led by Shelby Brown with 20 points, Abby Bertram with 18 points and Erin Walsh with 12 points. The Lady Flames shot 48 percent from the field, 39 percent (9-23) from long range and 63 percent (5-8) from the free throw line.
