Union men jump out early, hold off MC for 83-77 win

CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University men's basketball team posted an 83-77 win at Mississippi College Saturday. With the win, Union swept the season series with MC. It also snapped a three game skid for the Bulldogs and keeps Union in the top eight in the GSC and in the GSC Tournament with two games left to play.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Neither team scored for the first two minutes and 23 seconds of the game. Union's Jarad Scott got the scoring started with a layup, followed by a layup from Charlie Wilson to give Union the early 4-0 lead. Union never trailed in the game, while MC tied the game twice at 4-4 and 6-6. A 3-pointer from Nick Velasquez with 43 seconds left in the first half gave Union their biggest lead of the half at 22 points, 44-22. Union led 44-23 at the half.
  • In the second half, a 3-pointer from Tray Boyd at the 16:29 mark gave Union their largest lead of the game at 28 points, 53-25.
  • However, Mississippi College began a furious comeback led by Deondre Haynes. Haynes scored 24 of the game-high 31 points in the second half, including stretch where he scored 16 of his teams 18 points.
  • Union still led by 24 points, 63-39 with just under 10 minutes to play. Over the next nine minutes, MC outscored Union 38-18 and with 15 seconds left, had cut the Union lead down to four points, 81-77. MC had the deficit down as low as six points with 2:27 left in the game.
  • In the last three minutes of the game, Union was 10-for-12 from the free throw line to seal the win.

STAT OF THE GAME
Union shot 60 percent from the field in the first half, including 58 percent (7-12) from 3-point range to jump out to the 28-point lead.  

TEAM STATS
  • Union shot 51 percent from the field, 50 percent (12-24) from long range and 73 percent (19-26) from the free throw line.  
  • Mississippi College shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from 3-point range and 52 percent (11-21) from the free throw line.
  • Union out rebounded MC 36-27 in the game, including 8-6 on the offensive glass. Union committed 18 turnovers to 12 for the Choctaws.  

PLAYER STATS
  • Union was led by Charlie Wilson and Tray Boyd with 17 points each. Wilson added 10 rebounds for a double-double. KC Goodwin added 12 points, all coming in the second half. He also led with seven assists.
  • Mississippi College was led by DeOndre Haynes with 31 points, 24 coming in the second half. Otis Harvey scored 15 points on four 3-pointers, while Stacy Mack scored 12, including 11 in the second half.
