Union men fall at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Union University men's basketball team was defeated 71-53 at Delta State University Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in Gulf South Conference play. The Statesmen improved to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Statesmen scored the first four points of the game in the first minute, and then both teams did not score again until almost three minutes later when Tevin Florent scored Union's first basket of the game. DSU responded with a quick basket making their lead 6-2. Union then went on an 8-0 run claiming the lead at 10-6. The Bulldogs kept this lead until Armon Benford made a jumper to put the Statesment ahead 16-15. Union's Tyree Boykin responded the next play with a 3-pointer, giving Union back the lead. Neither team could take a commanding lead in the first half, but it was Union clinging to a 26-25 lead at the half. 

DSU took back the lead with a pair of free throws from PJ Davis 40 seconds into the second half. Todd Barnes scored the Bulldog's first two points of the half with a pair of free throws, four minutes in. Delta State then went on a 10-0 run, increasing their lead to 11. Pedro Da Silva stopped the run with a dunk, making the score 30-39. Todd Barnes scored from long range and a free throw from Tevin Florent brought Delta State's lead back down to five with 11 minutes left in the game.nThe Statesmen then went on a 10-0 run, making the score 53-38. Todd Barnes stopped the run with a jumper with six minutes left in the game. However, Delta continued to stretch their lead to win 71-53
 
Union was led by Todd Barnes with 20 points, while Tyree Boykin added 17 points. Pedro Da Silva added a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Union was 36 percent (18-49) from the field, 29 percent (7-24) from long range, and 67 percent (10-15) from the free throw line.

DSU was lead by PJ Davis with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brett Warner added 17 points and Cameron Monix scored 13 points. The Statesmen shot 46 percent (26-56) from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from 3-point range, and 63 percent (15-24) from the free throw line.
